Chapter 10

Olivia

I catch myself checking the opaque windows again for a familiar outline. The light outside is getting dimmer and I know Jo should be back soon. Oh, she’ll be fine. Probably just enjoying her alone time. My inner dialogue is tinged with bitterness. Her tone when she asked if I wanted to go with her rubbed me the wrong way. She doesn’t think I can handle being out there yet. I mean, is she wrong? I shake that thought away and stomp over to the bathroom. I’ll show her I can function fine without her here. I can be cautious and defend myself if necessary.

I look around, taking inventory of what chores need to be done for the day. I want to be in bed by the time she gets back, but not asleep so I hear her come in. I’ll have to get my timing just right. I pull on latex gloves and pick up a sealed box that contains bags of trash and human waste. My nose crinkles at the thought of what I’m carrying, and I try to hold my breath the entire distance to the side door. Usually, we do this with two people, so one person can hold the door and keep a lookout. Despite that, I’m determined to prove I can do things on my own today.

Setting the box on the ground, I open the side door and peer out. This morning was dreary, but the weather has lifted to sunlight filtering through a light layer of clouds. Fog no longer blocks visibility, and there’s only one host in the alley. The limping body is headed away from where I stand. I check the cloth covering my neck and prop the door slightly open with a loose brick from next to the door. I’m guessing it’s for the sole purpose of being a doorstop since it doesn’t match the material of the walls around me. I hoist the box onto my hip and quickly switch to using both arms to balance the weight.

Our pile of garbage is located behind the building next door to avoid other survivors noticing us adding to it or guessing which building we occupy. It’s not a far walk, but I feel uneasy about leaving the door propped open while I’m around the corner. I double-check my surroundings and take off as quickly as I can for the garbage pile. I round the corner and the foul smell hits me. I can’t help but gag. I throw the box hard at the pile and whip around. Moving away, I cover my face with the fabric of my shirt. I round the corner back to my safe haven and think of the cold water I can sip on inside.

A body slams into me and knocks me off my feet. I throw my hands out behind me to soften the impact of the pavement beneath me. Snapping my head up, I see a bruised body with a smashed face and no eyes reaching for me.
